This report analyzed 10 schools in Minnesota to see which ones offered the best value doctor's degree programs for nursing students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. More specifically, we discount our quality score by the published tuition and fees charged by a school. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The value is determined by how much quality your dollar buys.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. Average in-state tuition and fees are used for our statewide rankings.

Our analysis found Winona State University to be the best value school for nursing students who want to pursue a doctor’s degree in Minnesota. Winona State is located in Winona, Minnesota and has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 22 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend Walden University. The school came in at #3 on this year’s Best Value Nursing Doctor’s Degree Schools in Minnesota list. This large private for-profit school is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and it awarded 191 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Walden University are $10,092 a year.
Walden University is one of the schools on our list that is primarily online. Each graduate student at the school took at least one class online.

Out of the 10 schools in Minnesota that were part of this year’s value ranking, Augsburg University landed the # 4 spot on the list. Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the small private not-for-profit school awarded 17 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.

If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Metro State does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In fact, around 85% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Capella University ranked #8 on this year’s Best Value Nursing Doctor’s Degree Schools in Minnesota list. Capella University is a large private for-profit school situated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It awarded 171 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Capella University graduate students pay an average of $14,784 in tuition and fees each year.
Since the graduate programs at Capella University are online, the school is an excellent choice for graduate students who need more flexibility than what is offered at some other schools.
With a ranking of #9, St Catherine University did quite well on this year’s best value schools for nursing students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the small private not-for-profit school handed out 28 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
